Although the total number of concerts changes from year to year, the King's Brass performs approximately 100 concerts each year. The three-month summer tour, several Christmas weekend concerts, a three-week Florida tour in January, and additional weekend concerts throughout the year are consistent in their schedule.
How does the group come together? Tim Zimmerman holds auditions when an opening occurs. After a member is offered and accepts the position, Tim sends the music for the new season. After the music is memorized, the group comes together for one week of rehearsals before heading out on the road.
How did the King's Brass form? In the late 70's, Tim Zimmerman was teaching students in the Detroit area. Because he was having difficulty in convincing the students to practice, he decided they should perform for a church service. Since friends and family would be in attendance for this performance, it was Tim's desire that the students' motivation to practice would greatly increase. After this first performance, Tim began to receive calls from other churches inquiring about his "brass group." It was at this time that he decided to transform his group into a full brass traveling ensemble.
How does one become a King's Brass member? When there is a position open in the group, Tim will post the vacancy. After prospective members send in the required audition information, their applications are evaluated and Tim selects the new player.
How does the group rehearse if the members are from all over the country? Tim sends the music to the members to memorize before they meet for a week of rehearsals at the beginning of their summer tour. Though most of the rehearsals take place at this time, there are additional rehearsals while they are traveling on the road.
